PASTIME WITH GOOD COMPANY

…The joint concert opened with our Chamber Choir nodding briefly to Purcell’s seventeenth century before settling in the twentieth for a spiritual and secular repertoire that mixed the robust with the dainty, the emotional with the light-hearted. Slick, clear and resonant (a resonance enhanced by the glorious acoustic of Queens’ Victorian chapel), this was an intimate and intricate performance.

The second half of the concert was sung by our guests, the Ahrensburg Youth Chamber Choir. This is a bigger choir than ours, allowing for a bigger sound, and there was drama aplenty right from the start with some wonderfully sonorous and stirring music: Homilius, Bach and Mendelssohn all offered fantastic opportunities for triumphant choral singing. However, there was plenty of sensitivity on display, too: the spirituals and The Turtle Dove were particularly beautifully and poignantly rendered. In between there was the Royal good fun of the title piece, replete with a cappella drums and crumhorns: joyful, whimsical and richly entertaining. The choristers thought so too: it was such a pleasure to see the happiness shine through the smiling faces of the singers. This was an impressive, exciting and hugely enjoyable performance.

The Ahrensburg Choir rounded off its visit with a final concert in the School Hall on Monday, and what a finale it was. Undertaking an almost entirely fresh programme, the Choir drew gasps of admiration, whoops of support, and sustained applause. Brilliant Baroque; stunning spiritual; something Swedish; the gorgeous Flower duet from Délibes's Lakmé; the quite magnificent boys' quintet barbershop Vocal Storm (they took the place by storm, without a shadow of a doubt); some songs from the shows; and to cap it all off two outrageously flamboyant encores.

With the three joint-choir pieces to close the formal part of the evening, one and all then decanted to the Tuckwell Room for food and fellowship, and… loads more singing around the tables. Friendships strengthened through shared endeavour. What a wonderful visit this has been. Our sincere thanks go to directors Herr Manfred Johannsen and Frau Katja Kursawe and to their colleagues and choristers for coming, and to Mr Penny, Miss Weston and all the families here who hosted. Thanks too to the President and Fellows of Queens’ College for the chance to sing in their glorious Chapel.
